I just got back from spending time with my family in the suburbs. We chopped down a tree in my parent’s backyard like we do every year for our Christmas tree. I love the experience. Then we try and get the tree inside. My brother and my dad are adjusting the tree until my mom says its straight. I help my dad with the light strands, throwing away the strands that are only half lit. There seems to be at least one strand every year. Then my sisters, my mom and I all decorate the tree with ornaments.
This year I decided to stop by a Christmas tree stand in the city. I drove by about five different tree stands in the city and fell in love with the simplicity. I think that’s what I like so much about those stands. They are simple and symbolic. I don’t even know what was there before the stands and I never come across where a Christmas tree stand was and say to myself “hey that’s where all those Christmas trees were”. I guess that’s what celebrating the holidays does. It turns a basic month like December into a time to be with family and start memories that will be remembered over a lifetime. What are your Christmas tree traditions?
