I feel human 100% of the time. There are certain things in my life that make me illuminate my humanity. One of those being; not getting enough sleep. Another aspect of life that points a finger at my human-ness is being hungry. Like anyone else, when I don’t eat I get hangry. These are both examples of things that I let happen that remind me that I am human. I skip a meal on accident or I choose Netflix over sleep. I made those choices. But at the end of the day I need sleep and food.

It is interesting that those limitations and needs remind you of what you are and at the same time motivate you to do more. Limitations motivate us to create.

Katie Hile is the CEO and founder of Totonga Bomoi, a hand crafted fashion site based in the Congo. Katie had a woman approach her asking for help to earn an income. Knowing the women in the village were amazing seamstresses, Katie partnered with them to create a steady income by sewing purses. They started with 25 purses. After selling the purses in the United States one family was able to have a steady income. Many other families came to Katie and wanted to be involved. The head wrap in this photo shoot is from Totonga Bomoi. The elastic in the back of the head wrap makes styling easy.

“The fabric, known as pagne, is purchased by our artisans at local markets. Most pagnes are printed in West and Central Africa. Designs can reflect nationality and cultural traditions. The most popular Congolese pagnes are of Christianity and Independence.”

I think what Katie said after returning to the Congo just shows how human she is. It is that ability to feel totally limited and limitless at the same time.

“As I encountered suffering and tragedy, I also grew in grace and fellowship within the local community. A day never goes by when I am not inspired by the creativity and resilience of our artisans, and it is my hope that together we will renew and elevate our collective image of Africa so that we, too, may see the true beauty and endless joy that abounds in our world today.”

The team at Totonga Bomoi took human limitations and created a fashion line. Are you 100% human? Stop by Totanga Bomoi and tell them Hannah Lynn sent you.
